We’ve spent over a decade developing the Elephant Behavioural Welfare Assessment Tool.
This is a scientifically-validated tool which allows keepers to use behavioural observations to assess, monitor, and improve their welfare. It’s been used by elephant caregivers since 2015.
A complete re-design of the app in 2023 has made it much faster and simpler for facilities to access and complete.
How it Works
- The app provides step-by-step guidance on how to use the tool and set up automated data reports. The data gathered covers the elephants' behaviour and demeanour which indicates what the elephant is doing and how the elephant is feeling, resulting in a fast, efficient and low-cost way of monitoring their welfare.
- The reports summarise each elephant’s results over time, so that facilities can track their welfare, and detect any changes that occur. This means that facilities can document welfare improvements, or quickly detect any problems so they can intervene swiftly if needed.
- In addition to receiving an automated report summarising each elephant's scores over time, users can also download their elephant's data which they collected on the app.
- We provide our scientifically validated app free of charge to anyone working with elephants.
