This scientifically validated tool allows caregivers to monitor their elephants’ welfare and tailor care to each elephant’s unique needs and preferences. With this app, caregivers continually monitor and improve each elephant’s care.

Research To Understand and Improve Elephant Welfare
Each elephant has a unique personality. Our research on elephants’ psychological and social needs and preferences is the foundation for the development of individualized care plans and enrichment tools. We also aim to use this data to assist in the development of better strategies to avert human and wild elephant conflict.

Based on our research, we are developing and enrichment devices that encourage natural behaviours and provide choice: O ne of our current projects is the Elephant Jukebox, which allows elephants to choose what sounds or music they want to listen to. Monitoring elephants’ responses will allow us to continually improve and add to these enrichment tools, providing elephants with stimulation and a sense of control over their environment.
Global Support
for Elephants
We provide advice to facilities, organisations and government agencies around the world on managing captive elephants to optimise their welfare. We have contributed to major legislative revisions and will continue this work as another means of ensuring improvements to elephant welfare. We also provide workshops for keepers, mahouts and others who care for captive elephants, to share information on ways to support and improve welfare, using knowledge gained through our research programme.
